Choose ‘complex’ over ‘simple’
Thinking we got those two words mixed up? Disappointment alert…we didn’t. At least not when it comes to eating carbohydrates. You are probably quite familiar with the quick energy fix of having a candy bar during your afternoon energy dip? But it is called a ‘quick’ energy fix for a reason: your energy will peak (blood sugar spike) but then rapidly drop (blood sugar crash) leaving you feeling unenergised once more. Grabbing a complex carbohydrate however, such as an oatmeal bar, will give you a longer lasting energy fix. It takes longer for the body to break down complex carbohydrates, resulting in energy being released more slowly. So next time you want to reenergise with a snack, ask yourself: do I wish to spike or stabilise and energise?
